Why it is trending

The ATP had to correct its own arithmetic before Rafael Jodar could take his place in Paris. For most of last week, the governing body's published Race rankings showed Alex de Minaur ahead of the young Spaniard for the last qualifying spot at the season-ending finals in Turin. On November 2, after a public correction, the order flipped back: Jodar ahead, by 24 points, with one tournament left to decide it. That correction is only the latest twist in a season that has already rewritten the record book. Jodar, 20, made his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open in January, when he was ranked 165th. He won his first career title in Marrakech in April, reached the French Open quarterfinal, the Washington final and the Shanghai final, and on November 1 the rankings confirmed what a week of results had made inevitable: a debut inside the world's top 10, just 287 days after his first full season on tour began. The previous fastest climb, by Gustavo Kuerten, took 462 days. No man since the rankings began in 1973 had reached the top 10 in his first full season on tour. Why it is trending now: Paris is where that record meets its first test. The Rolex Paris Masters, the ninth and last Masters 1000 event of 2026, opened on Monday at La Défense Arena, and Jodar arrived as the ninth seed, scheduled second on Court Central on Monday after Lorenzo Musetti against Hubert Hurkacz, against Alejandro Tabilo of Chile. It is the fifth meeting between the two in 2026 alone — Indian Wells, the US Open, Shanghai and Basel before Paris — and Jodar leads the head-to-head 3-1, including a 6-4, 6-2 win in Basel on October 27. The winner faces either Casper Ruud or qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round. This story reports no Paris result: the opener was scheduled for Monday, and the ranking history and the corrected Race order stand regardless of it. The Turin picture is what gives a first-round match its weight. Four places at the Nitto ATP Finals were already taken — by Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Ben Shelton — leaving four to be decided in Paris. Jannik Sinner, the world No. 2, ended his season last month with a knee injury and is missing, which is why the battle around ninth place matters as much as it does. Jodar, De Minaur and Novak Djokovic, who needs at least a semifinal run in Paris, are all still in the argument, and a deep run by any of them changes the order again.
