Shopify Beats, Yet Shares Plunge on GMV Miss

Why it is trending

Shopify did almost everything right in the third quarter, and the market punished it anyway. Revenue rose 32 percent, profit beat forecasts, free cash flow surged — and the shares still sank by double digits before the opening bell on Tuesday, on pace, by one market-data count, for the stock's largest daily percentage fall on record if the decline held. The numbers themselves explain the paradox only halfway. Shopify reported third-quarter revenue of $3.742 billion, up from $2.844 billion a year earlier, a 32 percent rise that roughly matched consensus estimates — though the estimate itself is quoted differently by different data providers, $3.74 billion in one account and $3.775 billion in another, so the same result reads as "in line" in one place and "just short" in another. Adjusted earnings were 49 cents a share, beating the 47-cent FactSet consensus, and net income rose to $462 million, or 36 cents a share, from $264 million, or 20 cents, a year earlier. Gross profit rose 28 percent to $1.781 billion. Free cash flow jumped 61 percent to $816 million, lifting the free-cash-flow margin to 22 percent from 18 percent. Why it is trending now: the miss was in the metric the market watches most closely. Gross merchandise volume — the total value of orders placed through Shopify's platform — reached $119.145 billion, up 29 percent from $92.013 billion a year earlier, but short of the roughly $120 billion analysts expected (one data provider's estimate was $120.96 billion). Growth also cooled from the second quarter, when merchandise volume rose 31 percent, and from a first half in which revenue grew 34 percent against lower guidance. The premarket reaction tracked that disappointment through the morning: one early-morning summary put the fall at 16.18 percent at 7:36 a.m. Eastern, while Barron's later in the premarket session reported shares down 19 percent to $127. The direction never changed; only the size of the fall did. The guidance did not rescue the shares either. For the fourth quarter, covering the holiday shopping season, Shopify forecast revenue growth in the low-30 percent range and gross profit growth in the high-20 percent range — broadly in line with Wall Street's expectations of about $4.76 billion in revenue, according to Barron's, and a 30 percent growth model in another account. That steadiness, in a stock that had already retreated 4 percent in 2026 after rising 51 percent the previous year, was not enough to offset a merchandise-volume number that came in light. Shopify's management was due to discuss the results on a conference call at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday, after the release.
